ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Runaki Project announced that over 90,000 commercial sites across the Kurdistan Region are now benefiting from uninterrupted 24-hour electricity, marking a major milestone in the region’s energy development strategy.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Runaki Project said the initiative has successfully delivered round-the-clock power to 90,000 businesses throughout the Kurdistan Region, providing a stable, continuous, and load-free electricity supply. Officials emphasized that this achievement represents a strong foundational step toward a more sustainable and comprehensive energy infrastructure for the future.
The project has already impacted more than two million citizens, with both residential and commercial sectors seeing a dramatic improvement in electricity across the Kurdistan Region.
Looking ahead, the project aims to expand its coverage even further. Runaki officials confirmed that additional neighborhoods in all four provinces of the Kurdistan Region, including Halabja, will be integrated into the 24-hour electricity grid, with full regional implementation expected by the end of 2026.
The Runaki Project—meaning “Light” in Kurdish—is a flagship public-private partnership launched by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to overhaul and modernize the Region’s electricity sector. Supported by American firm GE Vernova and other international partners, the initiative aims to deliver reliable, sustainable power to both households and businesses. Amid chronic power shortages and frequent outages that have plagued the region for years, the project seeks to eliminate reliance on costly generators and reduce environmental harm caused by diesel emissions.
The announcement comes at a time of intensified regional focus on energy security and infrastructure development. Just days earlier, the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil praised the Runaki Project as a vital step toward ensuring electricity access for the Kurdistan Region’s 2 million residents. With energy demands continuing to rise and economic diversification underway, the Runaki Project is positioning itself as a cornerstone of the KRG’s long-term development strategy.
