Electrical Substation Team Leader – Inspection, Testing & Maintenance

Location: Erbil and Duhok Governorates, Kurdistan Region of Iraq

Work Arrangement: 70% Site-Based / 30% Office-Based

Working Days: Saturday to Thursday

Working Hours: 8 hours per day

Travel: Frequent travel to electrical substation locations is required


Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Substation Team Leader to lead and oversee technical inspection, testing, and maintenance teams at electrical substations across Erbil and Duhok Governorates.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical leadership to site teams, reviewing and analyzing test results, assessing the condition and health of substation assets, planning and monitoring work activities, and ensuring that all inspection, testing, and maintenance activities are performed safely and in accordance with approved Method Statements, project requirements, and applicable IEC standards.

This is a predominantly site-based position requiring strong technical knowledge, leadership capabilities, analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively under demanding project conditions.


Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Team Leadership

  • Lead and supervise technical inspection, testing, and maintenance teams at electrical substations.
  • Assign tasks and provide technical direction to team members.
  • Monitor the performance and progress of technical teams on site.
  • Coordinate with the Project Coordinator and other project personnel regarding technical activities and site requirements.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination among team members throughout the execution of the work.


2. Testing, Inspection & Asset Health Assessment

  • Oversee electrical inspection and testing activities on substation equipment.
  • Review, interpret, and analyze electrical test results.
  • Assess the condition and overall health of substation assets based on inspection findings and test results.
  • Identify abnormal test results, equipment conditions, and potential defects.
  • Provide technical recommendations regarding asset condition and required corrective or maintenance actions.
  • Ensure test results and inspection findings are properly documented and technically evaluated.


3. Work Planning and Execution

  • Prepare and plan work orders for inspection, testing, and maintenance activities.
  • Establish the sequence of activities and coordinate execution with the technical teams.
  • Follow up with technical teams to ensure planned activities are completed according to schedule.
  • Monitor daily progress and identify technical or operational issues that may affect project timelines.
  • Coordinate resources and technical requirements required for successful completion of assigned work.


4. De-Energization, Cutoffs & Energization

  • Plan and coordinate required substation asset cutoff sequences before inspection, testing, or maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate with relevant personnel regarding equipment de-energization and re-energization.
  • Ensure that approved isolation, de-energization, and energization procedures are properly followed.
  • Coordinate the safe sequence of switching and restoration activities with the relevant substation operators.
  • Ensure that technical teams do not commence work until the required isolation and safety conditions have been confirmed.


5. Compliance with Standards and Method Statements

  • Ensure all inspection, testing, and maintenance activities are performed in accordance with approved Method Statements.
  • Ensure technical activities comply with applicable IEC standards, project specifications, and approved procedures.
  • Review work practices and ensure that technical teams follow the approved sequence and methodology.
  • Identify deviations from approved procedures and report them to the Project Manager.
  • Support the preparation, review, and improvement of Method Statements and technical procedures when required.
  • Conducted daily toolbox meetings


6. Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare and submit daily technical progress reports.
  • Document completed inspections, tests, maintenance activities, findings, and outstanding works.
  • Review and contribute to the preparation of final substation inspection and testing reports.
  • Ensure technical findings and test results are accurately recorded and presented.
  • Assist in compiling technical recommendations based on inspection and testing results.
  • Maintain accurate records of work orders, test results, equipment condition, and completed activities.


Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required.


Technical Experience

  • Good knowledge and practical experience in electrical substation testing, inspection, and maintenance.
  • Previous experience working in the substation industry.
  • Strong understanding of substation equipment and electrical systems.
  • Experience in reviewing and analyzing electrical test results.
  • Ability to assess equipment condition and determine the health of substation assets.
  • Good understanding of substation operational and safety procedures.
  • Experience in coordinating technical teams and field activities is highly desirable.
  • Experience in preparing and writing Method Statements is highly preferred.


Technical & Computer Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to interpret technical test results and identify abnormal conditions.
  • Good understanding of electrical drawings and substation documentation.
  • Very good knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel.
  • Strong technical documentation and report-writing skills.


Language Requirements

  • Good command of Kurdish and Arabic are required
  • Good command of English is preferred

Candidates with demonstrated experience in electrical substation testing, inspection, maintenance, technical team leadership, test-result analysis, and Method Statement preparation are strongly encouraged to apply.
